Carl and Arlene Offord

Legacy of Love: Arlene’s Impact on Black Survival

Arlene Offord was a force for change at The Black American newspaper, where she supported her husband, Carl Offord, a short story writer and editor-in-chief. Her contributions extended to co-producing Black Focus, a weekly TV show on WNYC TV that highlighted issues affecting Black communities, culture, and the lives of Black American heroes.

Her dedication didn’t stop there. As the United Black Appeal coordinator, Arlene led fundraising efforts and developed medical and educational programs for communities in Haiti and Ethiopia. She also served as The Black American/Budweiser Personality of the Month Community Leader, reviewing applicants, visiting worksites, and coordinating media coverage for community awards.

After Carl’s passing, Arlene took on his role at The Black American, managing the newspaper’s operations as Co-Founder and Vice President. Her steadfast dedication to Black survival and the community in adversity continues to inspire others, reiterating the ideals honoured in our holiday calendar of heroes.
